When to Observe Shawwal Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?


The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Friday 17 August 2012) at 15:54 UT.

Sighting the new crescent on (Friday 17 August 2012) and (Saturday 18 August 2012) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Sunday 19 August 2012 and in the Western Region will be on Sunday 19 August 2012. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

Nigeria


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad from Ilorin City in Kwara state State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad said: "Myself and three other brother namely, Abdul Fatah Abu Hanifah, AbdurRaheem Suhaib Agbarere, Abdul Azeez Baba-elesin went outskirt the Al Abrar mosque, ogidi where we doing itkahf to search for new hilal but it was not visible and all other group we contacted within Nigeria reported negative sighting. Though, there are spurious claim of positive sighting at place like Offa, Kwara state by follower of One sufi shaikh called Bulala, some claim from some part of Niger a country border Nigeria at the North."

1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Hocine Chikh Aissa from Ghardaia City in Ghardaia State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Hocine Chikh Aissa said: "More than (100) observer were present in N'tissa station with 09 different binoculars and telescoup; The new crescent of Shawwal 1433 was not seen ,The western horizon was partly cloudy and hazy. The Sun set Behind clouds at 19:22.member of the club AMMI SAID AMATEUR OF ASTRONOMIE, Takabal Allah EL siam wa EL kiam Aid mubarek for all Muslimeen." "



Australia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Germany


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Martin Elsaesser from Munich City in Bavaria State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "From home i could observe the young crescent easily in good blue skies with the imaging system at around 12° elongation. Visual observation through a telescope at 30x magnification was also tried and the crescent could be seen through the telescope, not very difficult. Sadly, the crescent will again set before the sun this evening.

Ghana


1 . Time of observation: After sunset.Seen by others: ICOP member Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang from Accra City in Greater Accra Region State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang said: "There was a false sighting report that it was seen after sunset on Friday August 17 and the media made it public without first crosschecking with the National Hilal Committee. It was clear that on that Friday August 17, the moon set before the sun, hence the impossibility of seeing the moon. Idil Fitr prayers was held on Sunday August 19 nationwide."



Indonesia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset.Photographed: ICOP member Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi from Surakarta City in Central Java State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Saturday, 18th August 2012; the new Crescent of Syawwal 1433 AH was SEEN from my location, at Assalaam Observatory-Surakarta - Centra Java - Indonesia. We need images processing to appear the hilal because the west horizon was hazy. From other location our friends from Kupang and Makassar and other location also had reported that Hilal of Syawwal 1433 AH was SEEN. The ministry of religion on itsbat declared the 1st of Syawwal 1433 AH is on Sunday, 19th August 2012. Ied Mubarok... :)"



Malaysia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Firdaus Mazlan from Teluk Kemang City in Negeri Sembilan State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Firdaus Mazlan said: "On Saturday, 18 th August 2012 M equal to 29 th Ramadan 1433 H, I with my friend (Mr. Muhammad Zainal Abiden bin Mohamad Hani, Mr. Mohd Fairuz Tira bin Osman, and Mr. Muhammad Zaidi bin Zainal) cannot see the new moon either with telescope or with naked eye at Baitul Hilal, Teluk Kemang, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia (02:26:43.0 N , 101:51:16.0 E). It because the horizon is very cloudy. 

So, tomorrow, 19 th August 2012 M (Sunday) is still 30 th Ramadan 1433 H. Howewer, our goverment already announced that tomorrow is 1st Syawal 1433 H.

Time of observation: After sunset.Seen by others: ICOP member Mr. Yunusa Yakubu from Bauchi City in Bauchi State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Yunusa Yakubu said: "Here in Bauchi town it was totally cloudy we went out four of us but unable to sight the new crescent. However, we received report of naked eye sighting from two villages:-
1). Gum Village in Dengi LGA of Plateu State by Mallam Hussaini Abubakar and many other.
2). Azara Village in Awe LGA of Nassarawa State by Mallam Abubakar Ganere and many others. "



2 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha from kaduna City in kaduna State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha said: "The western horizon was partly cloud but clear. There were no stars around 6.55pm. However around 7.20pm there were about 3 stars in the sky and 5 further eastward. According to my experience, the moon could not have been seen because of the delay in the appearance of the stars around Maghrib prayer time."



Norway


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Milad Ali Ershaghi from Oslo City in Oslo State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Milad Ali Ershaghi said: "On August 18, 2012, moonset was 8:27pm and sunset was at 9:00pm in Oslo, Norway - therefore impossible to see the moon. I looked for the moon anyhow (amidst very cloudy skies) at about 9:30pm but was unable to see the moon."



Oman


1 . Time of observation: After sunset.Photographed: ICOP member Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi from Ghaba City in Haima State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi said: "Sky condition was not bad, it was hazy slightly. We started seeing the cerescent half an hour before sunset. But the cerscent was lost about 7 minutes before sunset. Then again after sunset we recovered very feeble crescent at the same location when we first sigheted it before sunset."



Pakistan


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Alam Sultan from karachi City in sindh State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Alam Sultan said: "Today (Saturday 18th August 2012 = 29th Ramadan 1433 in Pakistan) our members tried to sight the moon at nearly 50 places country wide but the moon was not sighted.
It was announced officially that moon was not seen thus Sunday is 30th Ramadan and Eid is on Monday.
May Allah accept our all good deed and bless all of us a happy Eid.
"



South Africa


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim from Cape Town City in Western Cape Province State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim said: "An estimated Muslim gathering of approximately + 40000 (an official count by the traffic controllers) were at Sea Point, Cape Town to catch a glimpse of the Shawwaal Hilaal. The atmosphere was electric with the excitement of all those present at the beach front. This is an experience never to be forgotten. Wish all of you were here"



Tanzania


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Mr. Zaffar Sheriff from Daressalaam City in Tanzania State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Zaffar Sheriff said: "with few clouds over western horizon, the sky was relatively clear. Sunset at 6.24pm, the first binoc sighting was recorded at 6.40pm. Naked eye sighting was confirmed at 6.49pm.
At sunset, the crescent was at 9degrees, and a good elongation of 12.5 degrees. 
I wish to present Eid greetings to all Muslims of the world, and let us join in to pray for ease for the afflicted ones "



United Kingdom


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Eng. Qamar Uddin from York City in North Yorkshire State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "On Saturday, 18 August 2012 (29 Ramadan 1433 AH) many people from throughout UK have attempted to sight the crescent moon (Hilal) of Ramadan after sunset. None of the groups were able to sight the Hilal, even though many places had clear sky conditions.

However, we have received reliable sighting reports (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari) from Jamiat-e-Ulama South Africa of positive sightings from many places.

Therefore, the Wifaq/Batley Ulama have decided that the month of Ramadan 1433 AH will have 29 days and the month of Shawwal 1433 AH will start from (and Eid-ul-Fitr will be on) Sunday 19 August 2012, Insha-Allah.

United States


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg City in Virginia State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "My daughter and I arrived at our sighting location at 7:53 pm EDT (sunset: 8:09 pm), using a pair of 10X50 binoculars, I started scanning the mostly cloudy and hazy western horizon with no success.  We I stayed there till 8:30 pm (moonset: 8:28 pm). "



Sun 19 August 2012



Iran


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Seyyed Ghasem Rostami from Mashhad City in Khorasane shomali State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Seyyed Ghasem Rostami said: "The crescent was seen in Mashhad at 12:16 (Iran time) in daylight time by naked eye."



Jordan


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Mohammad Odeh from Amman City in Amman State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was superb, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Mohammad Odeh said: "كلمني زميلي الأخ سلمان آل رمضان من السعودية، وأخبرني أن هناك من قال أنه رأى الهلال اليوم بالعين المجردة من إيران في عز النهار! استغربت من ذلك وقلت له دعني أجرب من مدينة عمّان الآن، فالجو شديد الصفاء، وبقي لغروب الشمس حوالي ساعة ونصف. أعلم أن نظر زوجتي أفضل مني، فأريتها مكان الهلال وقبل أن أكمل الوصف قالت نعم نعم أشاهده! وحددت هي مكانه بدقة بل وحتى رسمت فتحة الهلال قبل أن أصفها لها! وأكدت أنها تراه عدة مرات، وأنا لم أره... طبعا انزعجت! كيف ترى هي الهلال وأن لا أراه  :-) ... ولكن بعد 10 دقائق تمكنت أخيرا من رؤيته بالعين المجردة نهارا! كانت الساعة السادسة مساء وموعد غروب الشمس 19:21، في الحقيقة كان ذلك أصعب هلال أراه بالعين المجردة في حياتي! طبعا هو سيكون أسهل بعد قليل، ولكن وقت الرؤية كان بالغ الصعوبة. سبحان الله ومن غير ترتيب كنت قد قدرت صفاء الغلاف الجوي في منطقتي باستخدام جهاز

This is a daytime sighting by naked eye. I was able to see the crescent by naked eyes 90 minutes before sunset!"

Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha said: "Totally cloudy. Not a single star visible. Indeed science has supported and explained the Qur'an. Muhammad Rasulullah had also further explained the holy Qur'an making all on the same level of understanding. But unfortunately the Sunna of the holy Apostle bringing his followers together is misinterpreted."



Philippines


1 . Time of observation: After sunset.Seen by others: ICOP member Mr. Abu Ammar Mangorangca from Marawi City in Lanao del Sur State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abu Ammar Mangorangca said: "The crescent was seen this evening in three different places in southern Philippines. The first sighting report was in Sibutu, in Tawi-Tawi province, which is the southernmost town in the country. The second one was made in Bongao, the provincial capital of the province. The third sighting was done in Davao, the largest metropolitan city in Southern Philippines.

The successful observers were all members of the Tabligh movement who are the only group in the country taking active part in hilal sighting. We are grateful for them.

The eid observance will be tomorrow, Monday. It is noted that a majority of Muslims in the country celebrated the eid today because they followed Saudi Arabia.

May Allah grant us tawfiq, and accept our sawm and devotion during this past Ramadhan, and accord us the opportunity to witness the next Ramadhan.     "

Ghana


1 . Time of observation: Before sunrise. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang from Accra City in Greater Accra Region State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang said: "Local time for rising of the moon was 4.43 AM (0443 hrs-GMT). The waning crescent was expected to be seen supposing we had clear weather conditions as rising time for the moon was 73 minutes  before the rising time of the sun.  I called  a friend in Tamale in the Northern region (about 715 KM away from Accra) but weather was also not favorable."

Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad said: "In a coordinate effort across groups from Lagos and Kwara state, Nigeria, the waning crescent was sighted by one of the group at Al-Azhar Mosque, Ogidi, ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria.
Time : After 6am on August 16, 2012"



United Kingdom


1 . Time of observation: Before sunrise. Seen: ICOP member Mr. Syed Hashmat Wasty from London City in U K State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Syed Hashmat Wasty said: "It was visible to me first at around 04-15 hrs GMT with sunlight not far behind. It was seen with my usual glasses I use to see distance. 
There were strands of cloud and the moon was a bit difficult to see as it was a bit larger and less brighter than what was seen previuos morning."



Fri 17 August 2012



Germany

Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "The weather was bad in the lowlands, so we went to the local mountains in the afternoon, where conditions were excellent. The sky was dark blue right next to the sun.

We setup a small mobile instrument on the site, among other visitors and grazing cattle. We could easily track the crescent from two hours BEFORE conjunction till one hour AFTER conjunction, so we saw a old and a young crescent within a few minutes. As expected, the view of the crescent did not change at conjunction. The sun was shining, the view was nice, all the instruments worked fine, the crescent was easy to see and the automatic software did most of the work, so i had time to play with the kids and keep the cattle away. As the weather got worse later and the moon was to set before the sun anyway, we ended the observation, got some food and left the site to the cattle again."

1 . Time of observation: Before sunrise.Photographed: ICOP member Mr. Samy Khadem-Al-Charieh from Makkah City in Makkah State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Mr. Samy Khadem-Al-Charieh said: "We tried to see the waning crescent in Fiqrah (near Madinah), but we were not successful.

Our colleges in Makkah could manage to make a few CCD images in daytime of the extremely thin crescent (distance to sun about six degree).
"
